Saving & loading tapes
Keep a tape as a file and open it again whenever you need it — or bundle all your open tapes into a single project and restore the whole set at once.
A tape is not just scratch paper — you can save it and come back to it later, with every entry and total intact. DeskCalc stores a single tape as a .dsk file; a whole project of several tapes goes into one .dcp file. Both live in the File menu.
Saving a single tape
Each tab is its own tape. To keep the one you are working on:
| Save | File ▸ Save, or Ctrl + S. Writes the active tape to a .dsk file. |
| Save As | File ▸ Save As — save under a new name or in a different folder. |
| Open | File ▸ Open, or Ctrl + O. The tape opens in a tab, and the file name becomes the tab’s title. |
A .dsk file holds
exactly one tape — the entries, their operators and the running total — so it reopens looking just as you
left it.
Saving a project
Often a task is spread across several tabs at once — one per client, per job, per month. A project saves them all in a single file, so you can put the whole working set away and bring it all back later.
| Save Project | File ▸ Save Project… Writes every open tape into one .dcp file. |
| Open Project | File ▸ Open Project… Closes the tapes currently open and restores the saved set — each tab back in place, with its own calculation and total. |
Good to know: opening a project replaces what is currently on screen, so save your
present work first if you still need it. A .dcp
keeps each tab complete — if you entered figures in more than one calculator mode on a tab, all of them
are preserved.
Automatic backups
Even without saving, DeskCalc keeps a copy of every tape you close or delete for three days. If you closed one by mistake, open File ▸ Open backup copies (Ctrl + R) and pick it from the list to bring it back.
Which file is which?
.dsk |
One tape. Save, Save As and Open — the everyday way to keep a single calculation. |
.dcp |
A project — all open tapes. Save Project and Open Project — put a whole working set away and bring it all back. |
