Two tapes side by side

Pin a tape to keep it on screen next to a second, working tape — compare two calculations at a glance, and carry a result from one straight into the other.

DeskCalc normally shows one tape at a time and switches between them by tab. When you want two in view at once — an old quote beside a new one, last month beside this month, a reference total beside the figures you are keying — you pin one tape. It stays on one side of the window while you keep working on the other.

Pin a tape, compare side by side, and take a calculation over to the active tape.
Step by step

Pinning a tape

  1. 1

Select the tape you want to keep in view — click its tab so it is the active one.

  2. 2

Click the pin — the small Pin (needle) icon in the tape bar. DeskCalc splits the view: the pinned tape stays on one side, and a working tape opens on the other. If only one tape was open, a fresh one is created to work in.

  3. 3

Work in the active tape as usual. The pinned tape stays put beside it for reference and does not change.

  4. 4

To go back to one tape, click the pin icon again — it now reads Unpin.

Note: pinning is available in the adding-machine, dot-before-dash and Windows-calculator modes. The expression calculator cannot take over a foreign calculation, so pinning is disabled there.

Compare & reuse

Carrying a calculation across

The pinned tape is not just for looking at — you can lift a whole calculation out of it and into the tape you are working on, without retyping it.

  1. 1

Click a calculation in the pinned tape. The whole calculation is highlighted — not just the single line you clicked — because that is what gets carried over.

  2. 2

Press Take over. The calculation is copied into the active tape and totalled there.

It is copied, not moved: the pinned tape stays exactly as it was, so it remains your point of comparison. Take over as many calculations as you like.
